Preventing The Big C







Probably more than any other disease, cancer strikes greater fear in people than any other.  Relief washes over us when our doctor says, “I don’t see any signs of cancer.” But how can we keep the good news coming? And what can we do if the Big C does hit close to home?
Dr. T. Colin Campbell, while doing protein research at Cornell University found something very startling. The odds of inducing cancer in mice and rats pre-programmed to get the disease were 100 percent compared to 0 percent when a high protein diet was given these rodents.  This was astounding research, because what was supposed to be a superior diet, one high in casein, (a milk protein) turned out to be a potent inducer of cancer.   Another aspect of his research was extremely interesting: when the cancer was induced, changing the diet to a low animal protein diet actually reversed the cancer in those rodents.

What To Do?

So let’s get practical.  If you want to prevent cancer, even if you have a genetic predisposition towards it—having relatives, parents, siblings who have died of cancer—reducing animal foods could be the difference in preventing cancer, and even help reverse cancer if that has occurred.
Most cancer preventive strategies today center around several things as outlined by the American Cancer society:  maintain a healthy weight, limit processed and red meats, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and stay physically active.

The Power of Antioxidants

The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables do just the opposite of the highly processed foods which are acid in the system, have very little fiber, and contain chemicals such as nitrates.  These antioxidant fruits and vegetables slow the growth of cancer, enhance the immune fighting potential of the white blood cells, (T cells, and natural killer cells), and neutralize toxins that target the DNA.
